Real Cases. Real Red Flags. What the IRS Really Sees After Dark.
For the first time ever, I’m opening the audit room door and taking you behind the scenes of what really happens inside an IRS audit — the decisions, the tension, the human stories, and the moments that never make it into a tax form.
Welcome to Audit After Hours, a brand-new Zero Fluff Books mini-series releasing every Saturday at 6 a.m. EST through the end of the year.
This series blends everything I’ve learned as a former IRS Revenue Agent with the narrative storytelling you expect from an investigative podcast. If you’ve ever wondered how audits actually unfold, what the IRS pays attention to, or how small mistakes turn into big problems, this mini-series was made for you.
Why Audit After Hours?
After 10 years of government service — including my time as a GS-13 Revenue Agent in a Special Enforcement Program Group — I saw firsthand how complicated, emotional, and misunderstood audits really are.
Most small-business owners only see the IRS as a fear-inducing acronym. They don’t see the human side. They don’t know the patterns, the red flags, or the stories hiding behind the spreadsheets.
This mini-series pulls back the curtain.
Not with theory.
Not with speculation. But with real audit cases, told from the perspective of someone who lived them.
Names, details, and identifying information have been changed — but the lessons are all real.
What to Expect From This Mini-Series
Over six episodes, I’ll walk you through some of the most memorable cases of my IRS career — the surprising, the frustrating, the emotional, and the ones I still think about years later.
Here’s the lineup:
Episode 1 — The Audit That Started It All
My very first audit as an IRS agent: a “simple” charitable contribution case that taught me more than training ever did.
Episode 2 — Cash, Cars, and Red Flags
A nursery business with luxury car upgrades buried in the books — and the lifestyle mismatch that exposed everything.
Episode 3 — The Friendly Audit That Wasn’t
One of the nicest taxpayers I ever met… who handed me fabricated documents.
Episode 4 — When Bookkeeping Breaks Down
A cautionary tale about hiring the wrong bookkeeper and the cost of not having your own records.
Episode 5 — The One That Kept Me Up at Night
The most emotionally complex case I ever worked — a taxpayer living abroad, doing their best, and caught in a system that required proof they couldn’t produce.
Episode 6 — What Audits Teach Us About Life and Business
A reflective, honest closer about fairness, humanity, bureaucracy, and why I eventually chose to walk away.
